Design and UX Research
I am always growing my diverse arsenal of methodologies and tools and creatively combine them to answer research questions within project constraints.
People’s stories are data, and that data tells a story. My deliverables are shaped by the story revealed in the data. Traditional reports are often complimented by creative and interactive communication methods.
ETHNOGRAPHY
Experiencing someone's environment is the best way to understand their worldview. As "participant observers", researchers and stakeholders go into the field to meet users to where they are. Whether in the jungle or an office, embedding with your research subjects can yield key insights and create deep empathy.
A field visit often includes at least an hour of observation, an group exercise or individual worksheet and interview questions. I've also included diary studies. My years of enterprise research have made me an expert at handling the delicate balance between intrusion and immersion, designing sessions that are fun for users, a great brand experience, and incredibly informative.
HYBRID USABILITY TESTING
When you need to validate whether an idea will work the way you've envisioned, testing can help you get a quick answer. My approach to usability testing blends interviewing, task-based scenarios, and other methodologies from card sorting to prioritization exercises. I take into account the available design artifacts (prototype, wireframe, sketch), the research question, and the user profile to determine the best test design. I'm comfortable with remote and in-person testing.
Research evangelism
For research to make an impact, people must engage with it. I love coming up with creative ways to share research. Besides beautiful decks, I've created wordpress sites, email newsletters, poster campaigns, table displays and interactive trainings.
Teaching research skills to any role is also a great way to showcase the value of research. Check out my talks and workshops.
